GIVING THANKS
The holiday season is once again upon us and we will all be reflecting on another year gone by. This time last year, much of the country was still reeling from the attacks of September 11th. Today, we are more removed from the anxiety we felt at that time, but the threat remains. As we recount another year of blessings and challenges, it's important we remember those who continue to fight in defense of our freedoms.
This includes not only the men and women of our military, but our local police, fire and emergency personnel as well. Throughout the year, they have worked hard to keep our communities safe. Because they are on the front lines of the war against terror here at home, they need continued support and encouragement. Before the conclusion of the 107th Congress, we were finally able to pass legislation creating a Department of Homeland Security. This new department will help our local officials coordinate their efforts with the federal government in order to better protect us and prevent further acts of terrorism in the future.
And let us not forget our troops, who remain stationed across the globe. Some are in Afghanistan, helping that country continue its rebuilding process. Others await possible action in the Persian Gulf region. And still others are stationed in select locations, helping keep the world safe and working to promote peace among nations. As Ronald Reagan once said, peace can come through strength.
As one year ends, and another begins, we must remain vigilant in defense of the liberties we are so privileged to enjoy and our pursuit of those same liberties for people who have never experienced them. This holiday season, please take a moment to thank our men and women in every kind of uniform who sacrifice so that others may know and enjoy the gift of freedom.
