Helping Job Seekers, Annual Job Fair

With job losses affecting so many families across Southern California, the annual Road to Employment job fair has never been more important. In California, the unemployment rate is among the highest in the nation at 10.1 percent. In the Inland Empire alone, the unemployment rate is 11.8 percent. These numbers reflect the hardships endured by so many families as they look for the next job that will help them get back on their feet. That is why I am co-hosting the job fair again this year, and working with local and state agencies to help as many job seekers as possible find the job for them.

The Road to Employment job fair will be held this year in Rancho Cucamonga at the Goldy Lewis Community Center on April 8, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Among the employers planning to participate in this year’s job fair are Avon, FedEx, Gentex, Home Depot, and Personnel Plus, Inc. Also in attendance this year will be multiple local government and law enforcement agencies that are looking to hire, including the City of Rancho Cucamonga, the IRS, the Los Angeles Airport Police, the Los Angeles County Sherriff, the Los Angeles County Police, and the U.S. Border Patrol. In addition, many local educational entities will be participating in this year’s job fair to help job seekers interested in continuing their education or pursuing a new and different field. These include the Center for Employment Training, Chaffey College, Chapman University, the Universal Technical Institute, and the University of Redlands School of Business. This year’s job fair will also feature several workshops to help job seekers hone their resumes and interview skills, as well as learn how to effectively search for opportunities online.

The economic climate this year is as difficult as it has ever been, making help for job seekers and their families all the more critical. In addition to the job fair, I am also working closely with state and local agencies helping job seekers get through these tough times. For more information on the upcoming job fair and the state and local agencies providing support to job seekers right now, please click here.

As our economic challenges continue, so will our efforts to get our economy back on track and help families who are hurting. While I hope that efforts like the job fair will be helpful to those who have been hit hard, we still have a lot of work to do to get our economy growing again so that more jobs are created and hard-working families are able to keep more of their hard-earned money.
