The Battle Against Breast Cancer Must Be Won
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Millions of Americans have been touched by this disease, and other forms of cancer. Advances in research have helped improve treatments and the odds for survival. More work needs to be done, however, and a key facility in the fight against cancer is right here in the Foothills – the City of Hope.
The City of Hope was recently named by U.S. News and World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in cancer and urology. It’s not a surprise to anyone who has ever been around this outstanding facility or the people who make it so special.
I have been proud to support the efforts of the City of Hope in Congress. City of Hope’s work improves the quality of life for millions of Southern Californians, as well as people across the country suffering from cancer. Their advanced cancer research and programs, including bone marrow transplantation and breast and prostate cancer programs, have led to true breakthroughs in cancer research. For instance, they are working on an exciting initiative called the Advanced Molecular Medicine Initiative. This program is designed to revolutionize cancer treatment by treating it at the cellular level, rather than treating the entire body with whole body chemo treatments. Ultimately, this kind of treatment could help doctors identify a patient’s individual cancer cells and attack just those cells with medication. For anyone who has seen a loved one or friend endure chemotherapy, the thought of targeted treatment brings real hope to the fight.
I have helped secure federal support for City of Hope, yet those funds have only been part of their funding equation. The City of Hope is a prime example of a solid public-private partnership. Areas like cancer research deserve government support because they are seeking solutions for the greater good. But they should not be limited by it.
Local support means a great deal to facilities like City of Hope. Later this month, they will be holding a Walk for Hope to help raise awareness for breast cancer research, treatments, and education. For more information on that event, check out their web site - www.cityofhope.org/WalkforHope/la/.
Another great resource for cancer patients and their loved ones is the American Cancer Society – www.cancer.org.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please consider reaching out to someone you know that’s dealing with the disease. A friendly smile or a message of support can mean so much.
