Energy

Increase Our Domestic Energy Supply

Gas prices are high because the United States has not pursued resources here at home to build supplies. This leaves us susceptible to the fluctuating international price of crude oil which is influenced by world-wide demand. Congressman Dreier believes we must responsibly explore and produce American-made energy that will create jobs here at home and bring down the price at the pump. To do this, Congressman Dreier has supported efforts to:

Expand our nation’s refinery capacity.  As we have failed to build a new refinery in over three decades, we are forced to rely on aging refineries that operate at near capacity.  To expand refinery capacity Congressman Dreier voted for H.R. 6, the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act, which included provisions to authorize the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to streamline the permitting process and eliminate unnecessary and duplicative requirements for new refineries.  Additionally, Congressman Dreier has voted to permit the EPA to assist states with the permitting process and designate at least three closed military installations as potential refinery sites.

Maximize our available supply of oil.  To immediately bring down the price at the pump, Congressman Dreier voted for H.R. 6022, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension Act, which suspended petroleum acquisition for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for the rest of the year.  This will free up approximately 70,000 barrels of oil per day, and provide immediate relief at the pump.

Explore and develop our energy resources.  The United States has vast energy resources that remain undeveloped and off limits to us at a time when we need them most.  Congressman Dreier believes that we need to increase the domestic supply of oil through responsible, environmentally sound exploration in the known oil reserves of ANWR, and developing our massive oil shale resources.
