Appropriations Requests: FY 2010

Chang Industry

Project Name: Fire Shield

Request Amount:  $8 million

Project Recipient:  Chang Industry, Inc.

Address:  968 Palomares Avenue, La Verne, CA 91750

Explanation of the Request:
Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attacks pose an increasing threat to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Fire Shield, a third-generation Active Protective System (APS) that evolved from two other APSs developed by Chang Industry for the military, would protect military armored vehicles and military personnel from RPG attacks.  Funding in fiscal year 2009 for the Fire Shield project yielded successful test demonstrations of its ability to protect against RPGs.  It is my understanding that fiscal year 2010 funding would be used to continue the development of Fire Shield by integrating the system onto armored vehicles for further testing and system growth.
