Appropriations Requests: FY 2010

City of Hope National Medical Center

Project Name: Advanced Molecular Medicine Initiative (AMMI)

Request Amount:  $8 million

Project Recipient:  City of Hope National Medical Center

Address:  1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010

Explanation of the Request:
The Advanced Molecular Medicine Initiative (AMMI) furthers the mission and goals of the Navy’s Division of Molecular Medicine program, performing a variety of basic and translational research programs investigating human disease mechanisms.  The Navy Department’s Medical Development Program is directed to develop biomedical equipment and related techniques to reduce morbidity and enhance medical care for combat causalities.  The AMMI directly complements these efforts by improving therapeutic treatments for members of both the Department of Defense and civilian populations.  This research will also develop expertise and technologies directly applicable to defense against biological, chemical or radiological attacks.  In this regard, radiation biology is a critical area of research that has overlapping interests between the Department of Defense and the cancer medicine community.  It is my understanding that the funding would be used to expand a drug development program to generate targeted antibodies that will direct candidate compounds to specific tissues or cells.
