Dreier Talks to Small Business Owners About Economic Challenges

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas), Rules Committee Ranking Republican, participated today in a forum discussion with small business owners from across the country about the difficulties they are facing in the current economic climate and the challenges they see looking ahead.  At the Forum on Small Business and Economic Recovery today, Congressman Dreier and others heard from small business men and women about how they are working hard to keep their businesses moving forward.

“There’s no better way to get a sense of what’s really happening in our economy than to hear directly from the men and women who keep it going,” Dreier said.  “Today we heard from people like Mike Stevens, the owner of Action Printing in Lubbock, Texas.  Mr. Stevens talked about the challenge of trying to get a loan to expand his business, but being hamstrung by the lending limitations forced on banks under the control of the federal government.  His real life example provides a stark reminder of the unintended consequences of government intervention that can harm the ability of small business owners to grow their businesses and create new jobs.  If we are going to get our economy back on track, we need to take action to strengthen small businesses, the backbone of our economy, and ensure that they are able to succeed, grow and create new opportunities.  That’s exactly what I’ll be fighting to do.”

Today’s Forum on Small Business and Economic Recovery is part of an ongoing effort that Dreier has participated in to develop comprehensive solutions to the economic crisis.  He is a part of the House Republican Economic Recovery and Solutions Group, which proposed an alternative to the stimulus package debated in Congress last month.  Among other proposals aimed at getting the economy back on track, the alternative would have targeted relief specifically to small businesses by allowing them to deduct 20 percent of their expenses from their income taxes.
