WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) voted today in support of H.R. 2751, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) Act, which passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. This proposal, known as “Cash for Clunkers,” would help to stimulate sales of fuel-efficient cars. H.R. 2751 provides a two-tiered voucher program for car buyers who trade in autos that get 18 miles per gallon or less. Car purchases which improve the fuel economy by at least 4 miles per gallon will get a voucher worth $3,500; car purchases which improve the fuel economy by 10 miles per gallon or more will get a voucher worth $4,500.
“The idea behind this legislation is simple but important – the need to revitalize our auto industry through incentives,” said Dreier. “I have long supported this approach, which is why I introduced H.R. 100, the Commonsense Auto Recovery Act. My legislation provides a tax incentive for all new and used car purchases, so that we can get our auto industry back on track and begin to create new jobs in the many related fields, from manufacturers to dealers to mechanics to financers.”
Continued Dreier, “While today’s passage of H.R. 2751 is an important step toward strengthening our weakened auto industry, further and broader action must be taken, such as my proposal to spur auto sales of all kinds, if we are going effectively jumpstart job creation in the auto industry.”
H.R. 100 provides a tax credit in the amount of sales tax paid on the purchase of any new or used car. The credit applies to the first $50,000 of a car purchase, and is open to individuals and small businesses.
