WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) voted today to expand research and development opportunities for small businesses. Dreier supported H.R. 2965, the Enhancing Small Business Research and Innovation Act, which the House approved overwhelmingly.
“Small businesses are vital to getting our economy back on track,” Dreier said. “These entrepreneurs develop innovative products that lead to new industries and create more jobs for hard-working Americans. This bill provides the support small businesses need to continue their research and development activities.”
The Small Business Investment Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, established in 1982, provide competitive grants to small businesses to research and develop new ideas and technologies for federal government agencies. H.R. 2956 reauthorizes the programs for two years, through 2011, and increases the funding level of awards. The bill also requires federal agencies to help participating small businesses bring their new products to the commercial marketplace.
Dreier continued, “A great example of these programs’ success can be seen in AeroVironment, a Monrovia-based technology company which participated in the SBIR program in the past and today employs 650 workers and produces energy-efficient technologies as well as various Unmanned Aircraft Systems for the Department of Defense.”
