Dreier Supports Development Of Natural Gas Vehicles

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) voted today to support development of clean, efficient alternative-fuel vehicles. H.R. 1622 establishes a program for natural gas vehicle (NGV) research, development and demonstration and was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support.

“Providing consumers with access to affordable clean-energy alternatives to gas-powered vehicles will help improve air quality, lower energy costs for families and reduce our reliance on foreign sources of oil,” Dreier said. “H.R. 1622 will fund research and development activities aimed at accelerating the deployment of technologies to make NGVs cleaner, more efficient and readily available for all consumers.”

Currently, there are an estimated 119,000 NGVs throughout the U.S, which, in 2008, displaced nearly 300 million gallons of petroleum. According to the Department of Energy, almost 87 percent of natural gas used in the U.S. is produced domestically. A recent report by the Potential Gas Committee showed that U.S. natural gas reserves are 35 percent higher than previously estimated.

H.R. 1622 would establish a five-year program within the Department of Energy for natural gas research, development, and demonstration. The program would focus on developing cleaner, more efficient engines for light, medium and heavy-duty NGVs and improving public and private sector cooperation to expand the availability of NGV products that meet federal and state requirements.
