Dreier Votes to Extend Internet Tax Ban

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), House Rules Committee Ranking Republican, voted today to extend a ban on internet taxation for another four years. Dreier voted in support of H.R. 3678, the Internet Tax Freedom Act Amendments Act of 2007, which passed, 405-2.

"The internet makes life easier for millions of Americans, allowing them to shop, plan, invest, and learn," Dreier said. "It’s also a place of business, helping small businesses reach out to a much wider audience than they would otherwise have access to. It’s absolutely essential that economic freedom like that be free from any taxation."

Dreier said he would have preferred to have voted on H.R. 743, The Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act of 2007, which he co-sponsors. Dreier said a permanent internet tax ban would provide businesses and consumers with the long term certainty they need to plan ahead. "I’m strongly supportive of a permanent internet tax ban, which has wide-ranging, bipartisan support. It’s unfortunate the Democratic leadership refused to even consider the it. For now, a temporary ban will have to do, but we will continue to work for a permanent ban."
