Dreier-Supported Veterans and Active Duty Military Bills Pass House

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), supported a number of bipartisan measures this week aimed at improving benefits for our veterans, as well as active duty servicemembers and their families. The bills, which expand employment training opportunities for veterans, allow the spouses of servicemembers to retain their home-state residency, and honor the service of active and retired military personnel were all approved by the House of Representatives this week with overwhelming bipartisan support.

“As our nation prepares for Veterans Day, the House came together to honor and support our veterans and our active duty servicemembers and their families,” Dreier said. “These men and women continue to bear a high burden for our country. These bills are aimed at bringing attention to their sacrifices through efforts like the Veterans History Project. They will also help ease the road to employment for veterans in a challenging economy.”

S. 475, the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, would ensure that for voting and taxation purposes, servicemembers’ spouses would not have to change state residency when moving because of military orders. Dreier is a cosponsor of the House version of this legislation, H.R. 1182. H.Res. 866 expresses support for a National Veterans History Project Week. The Veterans History Project is an ongoing effort with the Library of Congress to record the personal stories of our military members. As a cosponsor of this legislation and a strong supporter of the project, Dreier recently sponsored and helped record for posterity the personal accounts of veterans who served in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

The House also approved the following measures in support of veterans and active military:

  • H.Res. 773 honors the United States Submarine Force.
  • H.R. 1168, the Veterans Retraining Act, provides assistance for unemployed veterans who enroll in and complete an employment training program.
  • H.R. 3949, the Veterans’ Small Business Assistance and Servicemembers Protection Act, modifies several programs administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Changes include streamlining veterans’ small business assistance programs, preventing certain early termination fees for deployed servicemembers, and improving veterans outreach.
  • H.Res. 291 recognizes the important role of assistance dogs in helping wounded veterans live more independent lives.
  • H.Res. 461 honors the Sentinels of Freedom, an organization that provides assistance to severely injured veterans. The Sentinels of Freedom is based in California.
  • H.Res. 868 recognizes the service and achievements of current and former female members of the Armed Forces.
  • H.Res. 89 encourages support for Veterans Day.
